Follow the map and attractions guide for what to do in Croatia
Croatia is fast becoming a popular travel destination with its varied landscapes, medieval villages, coastal towns, roman ruins, multitude of islands and amazing national parks. Follow this map and attractions guide for what to do in Croatia. There are things to do for everybody; for the history buff, the beach bum, the family traveler, the outdoor enthusiast (kayak, hikes, biking trails, swimming), the solo traveler as it’s a safe country and for the party animal in areas like Pag Island or Revelin fortress in Dubrovnik.
What to do: Planning
If you do not want to continually move hotels and still want to see the country, I would suggest you pick a few cities as a base from which to explore from. Use the intercity bus/coastal ferries to move between the cities. When you get to your destination city, use the bus (local or charter), daily car rental, scooter rental, catch a water taxi/catamaran, or book a tour to explore the area as a daytrip outside of the city.

The map below is a typical itinerary for exploring and things to do in Croatia from North to South where there is a variety of inland and coastal towns. It does not cover the northern coastal Istria region.

Renting a Car
Car rental agencies are located at the airport but it is advisable to book before you arrive as it gets busy and you may be able to not get a car. I have used rentalcars.com, autoeurope.com and discovercars.com on many occasions and found the rental process to be very smooth with these companies.
Ensure that you have car rental insurance either through your credit card or take out additional insurance. I have always made sure I had car rental insurance when renting cars as it is not about your driving, but also other drivers on the road. Rural Dubrovnik roads can be very narrow, especially the drive from Hvar Island to Sućuraj car ferry port that allows you to get back on the mainland. I spoke with some police officers who told me that they find rental cars in the ditch on a regular basis. You can rent your car with rentalcars.com here or autoeurope.com or with discovercars.com.
Where to Stay in Croatia
- When selecting your accommodations keep in mind:
- Is it centrally located?
- Is there public transportation, restaurants and attractions nearby
- If you hired a car, are there parking facilities
- What are the check in and check out times
- What are the facilities in the hotel: Spa, Swimming, rooms with kitchen, restaurant onsite
- What sort of accommodations are you looking for: hotel rooms, guesthouse, apartments
- We rented a car and travelled across Croatia. Our accommodations included rural homes, guesthouses, apartments in the city and hotels.
- There are some lovely authentic accommodations and modern hotels.
- Do not let the star rating guide you as the historic buildings, boutique hotels or authentic guesthouses do not have many of the amenities like swimming pools, spa services and onsite restaurants that is required for a 4 or 5 star rating.
- Check here for availability, pricing and booking of recommended hotels, apartments and guesthouses with varying price points in Croatia.

Travel to Croatia: Itinerary and Things to do
There are many activities for visitors in Croatia. We started in Zagreb, rented a car at the airport. We eventually travelled inland including visiting both Krka and the UNESCO Plitvice National Parks. We then moved towards the coast to Zadar, Split, Hvar and eventually to Dubrovnik. In between we stopped at a number of towns including the UNESCO Protected Trojir. Our itinerary and activities are below.
A. Zagreb – suggestions for What to do and visiting some great sites in 1 to 3 days
What to do in Zagreb
- Zagreb walking tour Old Town. Walk the attractions of Upper Town Zagreb, the self-guided walking tour will take you to the various attractions in ½ a day. You may want to explore some of these attractions in greater depth such as the Museum of Broken Relationships or climb the Lotrščak Tower. In that case the self guided tour will take more than half a day
- Zagreb self guided walking tour of Lower town including Lenuci Horseshoe . A ½ day tour of the U-shaped system of 7 parks and Zagreb botanical gardens. The Lenuci horseshoe is a short walking distance from Zagreb’s main Ban Jelačić Square and facing the main train station Glavni Kolodvor. The Square include pavilions, theater, museums, state archives and an underground mall amongst its many historical buildings dotted throughout the horseshoe. The half day tour may take longer if you decide to stop for lunch or visit the museums, mall or other attractions
- Walking tour Zagreb Lower town and Grič Tunnels. A 2 hour tour of the tunnels under Zagreb old town; they were built as shelter during the war and are now used by the locals to cross Old Town or to go between upper town and lower town. Not only are they a short cut, they are cool in the summer and a welcome relief from the searing sun
- Explore Zagreb, enjoy the Zagreb coffee culture; explore the pedestrian only food heaven Tkalciceva Street with a great many restaurants, bars and cafes. Spend some time at the Dolac Markets for some local fresh food, cured meats, cheese and other local delicacies as well as souvenir shopping.
- Book a guided tour with an English speaking local for day trips from Zagreb, a Hop-on-Hop-off bus route to popular attractions as well as food and walking tours.
Getting from Zagreb to Plitvice National Park
When you have finished exploring Zagreb, drive or take the intercity bus to the next destination, Plitvice National Park or accommodation close to Plitvice National Park. When searching for accommodations online, select the area near Plitvice as “Plitvička Jezera” or “Plitvicka Jezera” The park is 130km from Zagreb, about a 2-hour drive or 2.5 hours by bus. There are a number of places to stay overnight near the park. I would suggest you stay overnight at one of these places and arrive at the park early the next morning to beat the crowds.
You can take the bus straight to the park from Zagreb and back again to Zagreb or onto to Zadar, at the end of the day. Flexibus.com – destinations to input online are Zagreb and Plitvice. The earliest bus leaves Zagreb main station at 6:45 am. You should arrive 30 min early at the bus station as the buses do get full and you want a “good” seat. If you are continuing on to a different city, like Zadar, after visiting the park and need luggage storage at Plitvice, there is a “left luggage” option when you purchase your tickets. If you travel with larges cases, then it will cost you extra to transport the luggage on the buses.
There is a small wooded hut used as a bus station where you can catch your return bus. The wooden hut bus station is close to each of the entrances and should have details of return bus schedule. Ensure you know where to catch the bus at the end of the day to your next destination. There is an option to buy your bus ticket from the driver.
B. Plitvice National Park
You will need 1-2 days at the park, a full day to give it justice, 2 days if you really want to explore the park. A two-day park pass is available.
There are two entrances to the park where you can purchase your ticket, if you arrive early the line will not be that long and the park will be less crowded. Both entrances have a “left luggage option” and have the “wooden hut” bus station for return bus journey. There are maps at the entrance of the park marked with routes and you will receive a map with your ticket.
The 300 square km park is divided into two sections Upper and Lower. You will be able to seamlessly cross from the Upper Section (Entrance 2) to Lower Section (Entrance 1) by following a hiking trail (2 hours) or taking the 15 min boat ride which is included in the price of the park ticket.
- Book a guided tour with transportation: From Zagreb: Plitvice Lakes and Rastoke Day Trip
Park Entrance:
- Entrance 1 is located near the Lower Lake and your walk starts up high. You will walk down into towards the lake and the big Veliki Slap Waterfall (it’s as if you are walking down into a canyon as your starting point is of higher elevation)
- Entrance 2 is located near the Upper Lakes. There are more lakes and hiking trails and you will be walking up to the Veliki Slap Waterfall (as a visual – you will feel like you are walking up and out of the canyon as your starting point is of lower elevation)
What to do in Plitvice National Park
A list of the routes and walking time is on the park website HERE
We took Route K, from Entrance 1, as we wanted the view of the falls as we walked from up high and down into the park. Route K is a 6-8 hour walk and we completed it in under 6 hours, that was because the park was almost empty when we started and we could walk at a better pace then with the throng of people at a much slower rate. It is hard to get by people as the paths are fairly narrow. Take water and a lunch. We had a really nice picnic in the park. You will need some food if you are hiking for 6-8 hours.
The Upper and Lower lakes are connected by a boat or a hiking trail. The boat will take about 15 min while the hiking trail, though beautiful, will add 2 hours to your route. We took the boat to go from Lower Lakes to Upper Lakes instead of walking an additional 2 hours. The area where you board the board connecting the Upper and Lower lake has a small souvenir shop and most important – it has bathroom facilities.
Getting from Plitvice to Zadar
It is 1.5 hours (118km) from Plitvice National Park to Zadar by car. Flexibus.com has a route departing from the park at 5pm in the evening going to Zadar. The time to get to Zadar depends on which depending on the bus company you use. If you board at Entrance 1, you will have a better chance of getting a seat on the bus.

On the mainland, we stopped at Pećina for lunch (Plinjanska ul. 5, 20340, Ploče, Croatia). The food was really good and they had an outdoor patio overlooking the lake or you could sit inside. Getting Around Croatia
There are several options when visiting Croatia. It depends on the areas you want to visit and how long you want to spend. You can travel by hiring a car, using the bus or ferry system to travel along the coast.
1. Car Hire – Rent a Car
Car hire companies are all over Croatia. You can rent a car for the entire trip or rent a car in certain locations on a daily or as needed basis. I would suggest that in the summer months you book online ahead of time otherwise you may not get a car. Please note that many cities have no parking in the central areas because they are car free. So you may want to check with your accommodations if they offer parking. Many locations do not have parking in the inner old city; check out what’s available for parking where you are staying.
2. Use the intercity bus
Croatia has two websites that offer bus tickets on the various intercity buses. It aggregates the data for all private and public bus lines and gives you a timetable, a route and a price for most locations including the National Parks. Use Flexibus. to travel the country by bus
3. Croatian ferry
There are a few companies and options to travel along the coast to islands or coastal cities. Use croatiaferries.com. It is an aggregate of companies, routes, times and prices. Once you find the route and company that suits you, you can book online or pop by their office when you are in Croatia to book the tickets. The car ferries get full, however the walk on ferry, catamaran and hydrofoil usually have room
4. Trains in Croatia
The Train infrastructure is not well maintained. Trains can be slower than buses and don’t always run on time. It is not a well-used mode of transportation
5. Scooter Rental
You can take the bus/car to the different cities then rent a scooter to explore the area. This will allow you to use the intercity buses to travel between cities and avoid renting a car for the entire trip.
6. Within the city
- Each city has a bus system (in Zagreb, there is a tram system)
- Uber, use the app
- Scooter rental – many locations offer scooter rentals for the day and that may be a good option
- Rent a bike and explore (hourly rentals are available)
- Walk – If your accommodations are close to the inner city, walking is a great option as many attractions are centered around the city core
Airport Transfers
- Zadar Airport Transfer – Public Transport route and information from the airport to Zadar
- Split Airport Transfer – Public transport information from Split airport to main bust station in downtown Split
